Family Vacation – Frontier Town, OCMD and Assateague Island

Summer Vacation at the beach…

for me, it doesn’t get much better than that.  We were fortunate to enjoy this third year with my parents and siblings again.  It was a hot week, but thankful for the reprieve of great working air conditioners in our campers and cool water at the beach.

Frontier Town has a lot to offer:  a water park included in the camping price, plus miniature golf, ice cream, an arcade, two shops, wild west shows, a zip line and ropes course, golf cart rental, and many other amenities. Situated on the Sinepuxent Bay and reasonably distanced from both Assateague Island and Ocean City beaches, there’s availability to dock a boat at their marina for daily excursions out through the bay to fish, clam, and crab.

Assateague Island and Ocean City Beaches

Assateague Island Federal and State Park is just south of Ocean City.  You can enjoy primitive camping and driving on the beach in certain areas.  But there’s more. One great thing is the wild horses – they roam the island and the beaches. They usually travel in packs and aren’t limited to any area. Last year as we walked up to the beach, a black horse was nosing through some beach bags and such that were lying on the beach!  The other great thing about it is that since it’s usually less crowded, you can skimboard whenever and wherever.  We love Ocean City beach too, but with the crowds and the lifeguards, they only allow skimboarding after 5:00pm.   There tends to be more flies here probably because of all the natural vegetation and horses, but overall it’s still a great beach (clicking on any of the pictures below will begin a slideshow for that group of pictures…enjoy!).

Swimming at the Pool…

The weather was exceptionally hot early in the week, and the pool was mostly refreshing. However my brother-in-law Mike appropriately title it the “crab boil”, and that’s what it felt like on those hot days.   Cool water was pouring in to the pool, but it just couldn’t keep up with the heat.  One afternoon, we even left the pool to hit the beach knowing it had to be much much cooler.

Old Town Mining & Panning…

Gabriel and his cousin Cash spent lots of time together.  Twice they went panning in an “old mining town” for jewels and other treasures.

Marsh Wildlife…

The marsh that meets the bay is home to lots of wildlife. You can always find lots of seagulls, egrets, white cranes, and blue herons and more. There’s a good size dock to fish off of, or just to walk or sit and enjoy the sounds and sights of the bay. Diamondback terrapin turtles are plenty – and surprisingly, I saw a jellyfish actually swimming in the water.  I was thankful to was able to try out a newer camera to enjoy all of those subjects and more…

Fishing & Boating

We were really thankful to Mike and his family for sharing their boat.  I have to say that the boat is what puts Frontier Town over the top.  I mean, it’s a great place even if you didn’t have one, but if you do?  BONUS!!!!!   Steve and Mike fished just about every morning, treating us to croaker, clam and crab cake dinners.  Mike and Tracy, and the “Lucky Seaman” treated us to a few bay trips too.  It’s pretty shallow in the bay, so we were able to swim a bit, and then take a ride over to the Ocean City beach inlet…

Beach Boardwalk…

And finally, a trip to the Ocean City boardwalk for a traditional pizza dinner at Piezano’s and a stroll…

Sunrises Over Sinepuxent Bay..

Two mornings I made it to the dock to watch the sunrise.  The last day was with my mom, and that was really the better sunset of both.  I’m always amazed at the beauty of it – each and every time.   The camera lenses completely changed the foreground colors so much that you might not think it was the same morning in some of the photos.

Sand Dollar…

Back when we were swimming in the bay earlier in week, Tracy and Mike found a live sand dollar.  Not realizing they were planning on keeping it – since I’m told it’s pretty rare – I put it back into the water… Sorry!  But here’s the proof of it…

End of the Days & Heading Home…

As all good things come to an end, a few more pictures and it was time to take down the canopies and the lights and pack up to go home.  Gabriel and Christian were loving a ride in the camper with Pop-Pop, and so was I, having the chance to organize some of my pictures while riding!
