Welcome to the family, Mia & Luna (and Joe?)!

Want to ratchet up the fun at your house? Get two kittens!

Gabriel and I picked them out at the Animal Rescue League in Birdsboro. Though after losing Tiger (Kitty McFritty) I couldn’t imagine having another cat for some time, I came upon a facebook post with a picture of a dog and it said something about honoring one beloved animals’ life by rescuing another. So why not another cat, or maybe even two? Kitty McFritty didn’t seem to mind being the Queen of the house, but then again, she was older and probably used to being on her own. Maybe this time if we start with two little ones, they will love the company.

Mia, formerly Constance, was 4 months old, and amazingly stunning with her wide eyes and classy strut. Luna, formerly Pina, was 3 months old and shy and skittish. Before we took them home, we put them together in the ARL room to see if they would get along. They aren’t natural-born sisters, but they seemed to take to each other pretty well. Over the first few days it wasn’t long before we found them snuggled together for naps anywhere and everywhere.

Once they knew their names, we began to venture outside. I would go out with them and let them wander around in sight, then call them back to be. Then I would let them go farther from me, but call them back again. Eventually, they would be out of sight, but would return soon after hearing their names.

Kittens (and cats!) have no fear, climbing up and on anything inside and outside the house. Once I had to rescue Mia from my neighbors tree -she became wedged between two limbs after going up the tree to escape their dogs. Another time, I came outside to look for Luna and found her on the roof of the house! She had climbed the tree next to it, jumped onto the roof.

Mia is extremely curious…so much so that twice she was missing for a few days, and I’m willing to bet she was locked in a shed or something. Both of those times when she finally made it home, she was dirty and starving! Luna comes home every night, and I think that’s because she enjoys sleeping with me in my bed. She usually comes to the side of my bed and “waits” to be invited….I love that she is so snuggly.

Our previous cat, Tiger, was territorial enough to never let any cat hang around outside our house. She chased every one of them away, so I never thought twice about the bowls of food and water I would leave on the deck for her in case I wasn’t home or she decided to stay out later than my bedtime. Perhaps because Mia and Luna were so young when they were adopted (Kitty was an abandoned indoor/outdoor cat when she found us), they aren’t territorial at all. So before I knew it, I had a few strays/ferals visiting us – even a raccoon with no tail! The girls don’t care for all this, and I don’t blame them. But out of that pack, one arose who decided that this was his deck. Joe. He even chases Mia and Luna from the deck at times. I feel bad for him, so I can’t desert him. He’s a lover, too. He stays outside – I even made a warm house for him last winter. He comes around later in the evening to eat most times, so I’ll occupy him while I call the girls in if it’s late and they’re out. They are used to him for sure, but they still don’t care for him.

He’s really sweet, though he’s a scrapper. We’re coming up on our second winter soon. If they’d all get along, it could work out for him to come inside, but it’s still too unstable. Just last night, again, Luna was fighting with Joe through the glass door – boxing and hissing! So I can’t let the girls feel like they don’t have a safe place from him. I pray about it, and we’ll see where it goes. God has been good to me so far, and I don’t doubt that He will continue to be so.
