All along, I was excited for him. All along, I was trying to keep a good perspective and help him prepare for it. All along, I believed this was the best path for him to take. Yet there I lay, in bed, puffy-eyed. Maybe he’s not ready. Maybe he needs more time, and I’ve been pushing too hard, simply assuming that he was just as interested in his own future as I was. Maybe it’s not my decision to make. Maybe if I just lay here with my eyes open, tomorrow won’t come after all.
“a time to plant and a time to uproot” -Ecclesiastes 3:2
But isn’t this what we wait for? We wait for them to walk so we don’t have to carry them around anymore.
We cheer for them to score a goal and hit a home run so they can feel accomplished.
We encourage them as they enter high school, hoping to share in their excitement as to what lies ahead in those next four years.
We hope they find something that gives them inspiration and motivation – a passion for something, anything other than the Xbox. And we pray for their own spirit of independence that will keep them from wanting to live in the basement, getting all too comfortable at home.
We hope that they want more out of life than that. We want so much for them. And so in their last year of high school, we visit colleges hoping to find the one that fits them best.
It seemed like a long road to the Pennsylvania College of Technology Welcome Weekend, but with much prayer it finally arrived. The day before was spent packing and preparing, even amidst a short power outage that we made the best of by attempting a game of Monopoly…
Why does it seem sometimes as though the weather mimics the feeling of the day? Clouds covered the morning while we filled up the van for the trip.
As we arrived in Williamsport we were greeted with a torrential downpour. Fortunately it cleared by the time we lined up for the move-in queue and for the rest of the day as we visited the campus and welcome activities.
Finally time to say goodbye and leave him on his own….
It doesn’t appear so, but boy was that tough.
But there’s always something to be thankful for: I’m thankful that he found his place. ♥
